No invasion... no kidnapping...
no ‘hostile takeover’ necessary
On Friday, January 2nd, a top-level Chinese delegation landed in Caracas...
Led by Xi Jinping’s special envoy for Latin America, the group spent the evening at Venezuela’s presidential palace, reaffirming Beijing’s ‘strategic relationship’ with Nicolás Maduro.
Three hours later, US Special Forces stormed the very same compound.
By dawn, Maduro was in American custody. Leaving the Chinese diplomats still in Venezuela... watching their ‘relationship’ crumble right in front of them.
As the story broke the next morning, Trump’s opponents in Washington and in the media went into meltdown...
US Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer called the President ‘reckless’, saying Trump’s move ‘should strike fear in the hearts of all Americans’.
The New York Times said it was ‘illegal’ and ‘unwise’.
China called it a ‘clear violation of international law’.
So what could possibly prompt the US to invade a sovereign country and kidnap its president?
And if you’re not paying attention, you’re missing one of the clearest wealth-building signals we’ve seen in 15 years.

Billions of dollars are quietly flooding into a specific sector of the ASX, sending a handful of stocks much higher...
So what’s driving this?
And what does it have to do with the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro?
Everything.
See, that Chinese delegation wasn’t in Venezuela just to make pleasantries.
They were sizing up one of the most naturally gifted patches of real estate on the planet.
Venezuela sits on the world’s largest proven oil reserves – 303 billion barrels.
That’s more than Saudi Arabia... more than Russia...
But oil is only half the picture…
You see…
Venezuela also has the largest gold deposit in Latin America...some of the biggest known deposits of iron ore and bauxite in the world... significant deposits of copper and coltan... and what is reported to be huge, untapped deposits of nickel...
Those last four elements are what we call ‘critical minerals’, the hottest commodities — and one of the hottest investments — in the world right now.
Why?
Because virtually nothing in our future world works without them. Military defence systems. Data centres. AI chips. Electric vehicle motors. Nuclear submarines. Wind turbines. Smartphones. Fighter jets.... and more.
According to the International Energy Agency, we’re looking at demand growth for these critical minerals over the next few years that will make your head spin...
Trump has two problems here.
First, China dominates roughly 70% of the mining... and a staggering 90% of the processing of these materials. Beijing has an enormous chokehold on supply chains.
Second, resource-rich Venezuela is an unstable socialist dictatorship, right in America’s backyard.
So when Chinese officials showed up to ‘reaffirm strategic ties’ with Maduro...
Within hours of Maduro’s capture, the President made his intentions crystal clear:
‘We’re going to have our very large US oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars and fix the badly broken infrastructure...’
No pretence. No talk of returning political stability... or freeing Venezuelans from a corrupt dictatorship.
Just: We want the oil. It’s not China’s. It’s OURS.
In case anyone was in any doubt, Trump’s Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick spelled it out: Venezuela has ‘all the critical minerals...and a mining history that’s gone rusty’ – which the US can ‘fix.’
But fixing it isn’t going to be easy.
Venezuela isn’t just a political nightmare... its energy infrastructure is in ruins. It’ll take years – maybe even decades – to stabilise and develop.
But Trump still sees this as a ‘win-win’ for the US. Insofar as it’s a LOSS for China.
And he’s WAY PAST caring what his opponents think.
One week after the Maduro raid, Trump was asked about his designs on the arctic island.
In characteristically direct fashion, he told reporters:
“We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not. If we don't do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we're not going to have Russia or China as a neighbour.”
The approved line is that America needs Greenland for ‘national security’ reasons. The island is home to strategic early warning systems... part of a so-called ‘golden dome’ to protect the US from a missile strike.
However... somewhat conveniently, Greenland is also home to 1.5 million metric tons of rare earths — the 8th largest deposit globally.
China’s been sniffing around there too, but Denmark keeps blocking them.
Even Trump’s former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz admits the President’s designs on Greenland are ‘about critical minerals’ and ‘natural resources.’
The thing is...
The island is 80% ice. There’s next to zero energy infrastructure. Mining experts estimate it’ll cost tens of billions of dollars just to break ground... then take as many as 16 years to reach viable production.
So where does Trump get the critical minerals he needs right now?
From US.
Australia is sitting on the second biggest stockpile of these desperately needed materials anywhere on Earth... some US$1.4 trillion worth, just sitting in the ground, waiting to be dug up.
Look at our next biggest competitor, Russia. They have less than HALF what we have. And they’re under sanctions, meaning they can’t sell to the US.
And unlike Venezuela... unlike Greenland... we’re ready to go NOW.
We have the mines. The expertise. The infrastructure. The political stability...
And most importantly of all: We’re ALLIES. We speak the same language. Share the same values. And we won’t cut America off when the political winds change.
That’s why, on October 20th last year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese sat down with Trump in the East Room of the White House and signed something called The Critical Minerals Framework.
No invasion necessary. No territory given up... and no kidnapping required.
Just a deal to spend an initial US$13 billion to dig up and ship Australian critical minerals to the US.
Both countries committed to pump $3 billion into Australian projects over the next six months alone.
That’s $1 billion every 60 days – flowing directly into mining operations across nearly every state and territory... including:
After signing the deal Trump said:
‘In about a year from now, we’ll have so much critical minerals and rare earths that you won’t know what to do with them...’
US Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, says this deal is a ‘game changer’:
‘We need the critical minerals,’ he said. ‘It’s part of the race that we’re in. And winning the AI arms race is just as important as the Manhattan Project or any other project we’ve ever met.’
And now it’s being backed by serious money.
Money that’s already moving markets:
Yes, you’d expect a little euphoria in the markets after a monster deal like this was announced. And to be fair, some of these stocks have pulled back a little since then.
But this is no short-term sugar rush. We’re talking about a long term commitment here. Major infrastructure is being built. Production is being ramped up. And new capacity is already coming online...
What you’re seeing here is the beginning of a structural shift in global supply chains. Over the next 12-18 months, I would expect:
Billions more in US capital pouring into Australian projects...
Accelerated M&A activity as global miners scramble to lock in supply before prices surge...
And you’re likely to see significant price appreciation in companies with proven deposits and processing capacity already in place.

The iron ore boom of the early 2000s is widely credited as the force that saved Australia from recession in 2008.
Our economy thrived while many others tanked. Stocks went up... house prices went up... people felt happy and positive... prosperous and wealthy.
